The sleep-deprived group had slower average reaction times, 2.86 seconds versus 2.34 seconds for the alcohol group, and worse lateral control of the vehicle. In plain terms, tired drivers reacted slower and wandered more inside their lane than drivers who had been drinking. That is not a minor gap. The Gap Between Official Numbers And Real Risk
Federal crash statistics have long shown drowsy driving involved in only about 1 to 2 percent of crashes. But a large-scale naturalistic driving study using video of actual eyelid closures found observable drowsiness present in 8.8 to 9.5 percent of all crashes studied. That is a massive gap between what gets written on a police report and what cameras actually captured happening inside the car.
